Bathroom Renovation: A Work in Progress

I’m excited to share an update on a bathroom renovation project I’ve designed for a client in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The transformation is well underway, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the design vision come to life as the client executes it step by step. Here’s a sneak peek at the progress and the design elements shaping this space into something truly special.

The Vision: Modern Comfort with a Timeless Feel

This project began with my client’s idea to unify two adjacent rooms—a bathroom and a laundry room—into one cohesive space, with the addition of a shower. The goal was to enhance the functionality of the space while preserving the character and history of the home. The property, built in 1910, is a historic stone lodge nestled in Crystal Park, Manitou Springs, and is the oldest inhabited residence in the area. The exterior walls are made of granite, and the interior features white quartz, all sourced from the property itself.

With such a strong historic presence, my design approach was to respect the home’s character while incorporating modern, sophisticated elements to create a space that feels clean, relaxing, and welcoming—seamlessly blending the past with the present.

To achieve this, I developed a design that embraces a neutral color palette with warm accents, and incorporating natural materials like marble and handcrafted Zellige tiles, which complement the home’s original stonework and historical charm.

Elevating Everyday Functionality

Here are some mood boards, floor plans, and elevations that illustrate how the initial vision took shape. Collaborating closely with my client, Robin, every decision was rooted in the idea of creating a space that was not only functional but also beautiful for everyday living.

One of the key aspects of the renovation was integrating the laundry room into the bathroom. The challenge lay in designing a layout that enhanced the flow of the space without sacrificing aesthetics. By optimizing storage and thoughtfully positioning appliances, we transformed a previously cramped area into a serene, highly efficient space.

After completing the demolition phase—stripping the space down to its core, removing old fixtures and cabinetry, and knocking down the dividing wall—the space opened up beautifully, creating a blank canvas for the new design. Additional updates included closing off the two original doors to each room, introducing a new sliding door for improved flow, and updating the plumbing and electrical systems to support the new layout.

Design Details I’m Excited About

The materials and fixtures selected for this project reflect my ethos: Less, but better. Each piece was chosen not just for its aesthetic appeal but for its material quality, durability, comfort, and ease of use—always considering how it will make someone feel. The result is a design that embodies character and is crafted from high-quality materials meant to stand the test of time. Here’s a glimpse into the choices:

  • 2x6 Zellige tiles in a herringbone pattern for the shower floor to add texture and depth

  • 4x4 Zellige tiles for the shower walls to create a timeless, handcrafted feel

  • Polished Chrome fixtures for a sleek, modern contrast

  • custom wall-to-wall vanity for a contemporary yet functional aesthetic, offering ample storage space

  • Carrara marble countertops for a refined, elegant finish

  • crackled pendant light to introduce warmth and a handmade element to the space

The Design Process

I’ve included process photos of the demolition and installation to provide a closer look at how the space is evolving. These images highlight the journey from a blank slate to the elements that will soon complete the design.

Next Steps: What’s Coming Soon

As we continue to follow the design plan, we’re entering the exciting phase of tiling the shower and installing the slide-in pocket doors to cover the washer/dryer tower. I’m working closely with Robin to ensure that the vision is realized in every detail—from the tile layout to the finishing touches.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this renovation journey. Next time, I’ll be sharing the tiling process, my top tips, sources, and all the details as the space comes together! You won’t want to miss the transformation—follow along and feel free to share your thoughts or questions in the comments.
